D.C. Police are currently investigating an incident that occurred outside the Dupont Circle Shake Shack as a possible hate crime. The workers involved have been suspended pending further investigation. The altercation was captured on video by a bystander and shows several Shake Shack employees allegedly attacking a customer.
According to Christian Dingus, the victim at the center of the incident, it all began when he and his friends were waiting in line for their food at the restaurant. Dingus claims that when he inquired about the delay, an employee responded aggressively. When Dingus’ partner tried to calm the situation by kissing him, another worker intervened and asked them to stop. Dingus decided to walk away to avoid further conflict.
However, the situation escalated when Dingus’ partner was escorted out of the restaurant and a confrontation ensued outside. Dingus stepped in to protect his partner and was allegedly attacked by the workers. He sustained injuries but did not fight back during the assault.
Despite the presence of a police vehicle nearby, no arrests were made at the scene. The police took statements from Dingus and witnesses and are currently processing a report on the incident. The police report released later categorized the attack as a suspected hate crime.
In response to the incident, Shake Shack issued a statement expressing their commitment to the safety of their guests and employees. They are cooperating with the authorities and have suspended the workers involved pending further investigation. However, Dingus mentioned that he has not been contacted by Shake Shack directly.
Dingus expressed his belief that if he and his partner were a heterosexual couple, they would not have been treated the same way. The emotional and physical pain from the incident continues to affect him.
The investigation into the suspected hate crime is ongoing, and Dingus hopes for a resolution that addresses the violence and discrimination he experienced. The incident has sparked discussions about LGBTQ+ rights and the importance of creating safe spaces for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
