Spaniard Sergio Busquets will join Argentine Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, the MLS club announced Friday. Following months of rumours, Inter Miami today released a video announcing the signing of Busquets and containing quotes from soccer stars including Pep Guardiola and Luka Modric praising Messi’s former Barcelona teammate.
After fifteen seasons in which he won 32 titles (9 Leagues, 7 Copas del Rey, 7 Spanish Super Cups, 3 Champions Leagues, 3 Club World Cups and 3 European Super Cups), Busquets, 34, recently announced that he would to leave Barcelona.
Busquets was not only an anchor in the midfield of the Barca club but also marked an era in the Spanish team, with which he won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Euro Cup.
The midfielder, who had developed his entire professional career at Barcelona, ??will make his debut abroad in the MLS at the hands of a Messi with whom he shared numerous triumphs in the Blaugrana shirt.
These two important reinforcements, who will be able to register in the MLS summer transfer window that begins on July 5, will come in handy for an Inter Miami that is in great need of help since, for now, it is last in the Eastern Conference with only 15 points in 17 games.
The Miami Herald newspaper, citing a source close to the negotiations, assured that Busquets will occupy one of the three ‘designated player’ places at Inter Miami.
The ‘designated player’ figure, created by MLS in 2007 to be able to bring David Beckham to the LA Galaxy, allows teams to circumvent salary limits to face certain flashy signings.
Busquets, who also had offers from Saudi Arabia for his future in football beyond Barcelona, ??could have one more ex-partner at Inter Miami apart from Messi, since there have also been rumors in recent days that place the Florida team as a possible destination for Jordi Alba.
