Events are underway in France and the UK to honor the 80th anniversary of the pivotal Allied invasion of France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. This historic event marked a significant turning point in World War II and ultimately led to the defeat of Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe.
In Normandy, at Gold Beach in Arromanches, Major Trevor Macey-Lillie, a piper with the Scottish gunners, played a Scottish lament on the bagpipes to commemorate the exact moment British troops landed on the French beaches. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak addressed attendees at the UK commemorative event, emphasizing the sacrifices made by those involved in the D-Day landings.
Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, gathered to pay tribute to the veterans and commemorate the anniversary. King Charles III highlighted the “supreme test” faced by the allies 80 years ago and expressed gratitude for the courage shown during that critical moment in history.
At the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, wreaths were laid to honor the 22,442 British servicemen and women who lost their lives on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in 1944. The Red Arrows performed a flypast, and President Macron awarded the Legion of Honour to 104-year-old British World War II veteran Christian Lamb for his contributions to the D-Day planning.
In Canada, Prince William attended the Canadian commemorative ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre, praising Canadian veterans for their bravery and sacrifice. President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden met with World War II veterans at the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-Sur-Mer, where they bestowed France’s highest medal of honour, the Légion d’honneur, on surviving veterans.
