One of the ways in which a marked simplification of what life is could be done would be by reducing it to a continuous succession of decision-making. It can be trivial things, like what to eat that day or what color shirt to choose. As well as others of great importance and that will have great consequences in the future, such as the university degree to be studied, marrying or not marrying a couple of years, or taking the step of moving to another country.
Choosing between two or more options is not always an easy task. Although some people have it easier than others when it comes to opting for a single exit. But for certain individuals this can become a real headache and suffering. And this has an explanation: aboulomania. Contrary to what one might think, it is far from a simple personality trait based on insecurity, but rather a pathology.
Aboulomania is a psychological disorder characterized by strong indecision when making decisions, as defined by psychologist María Victoria Orbe Valls. The specialist explains that most of the decisions that a person must face on a daily basis are solved almost unconsciously. Unless, of course, it is a matter of greater importance and therefore requires a more thorough and careful analysis. But the problem with people who have aboulomania is that they turn even the most inconsequential decision into a highly relevant one.
How to get dressed before leaving home, what plate of food to choose in a restaurant, what to watch on television or how to respond to a person during a conversation are just some of the examples of the decisions that these people face with great indecision. The day to day of the person becomes a “constant struggle” that can even block or incapacitate the individual. The psychologist explains that this situation of suffering can lead to anxiety disorders and problems sleeping or insomnia.
An indecisive person is someone who requires more time to ponder when making a decision, since they are faced with a greater number of doubts that are often related to an insecure personality. But the case of those who suffer from this psychological disorder is different.
Aboulomania patients experience excessive concern about the different options among which they have to choose, in addition to overestimating the negative consequences that an unwise decision would imply. They are unable to choose for themselves, so they continually depend on the advice and options of others. All this causes them great insecurity, which is why they often change their minds and feel anxious.
