Starting next week, drivers heading eastbound on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs will face temporary closures in the morning to prevent accidents caused by the blinding sun glare. The Colorado Department of Transportation recently announced this safety measure, which will occur at Floyd Hill during the sunrise period and will last for about 45 minutes to an hour as needed.
This decision was made due to the sun’s position and the hill’s configuration, which can lead to dangerous glare for drivers traveling eastbound on Floyd Hill. The intense sunlight can affect drivers as far as Genesee from sunrise until around 8:30 a.m.
During the closures, eastbound traffic will be redirected at the U.S. 6 exit. Drivers will then have the option to continue on U.S. 6 through Clear Creek Canyon or take the frontage road and re-enter the freeway at Beaver Brook. It’s important to note that trucks taller than 12 feet and 7 inches are not permitted to use the tunnels along Clear Creek Canyon.
If you are planning to travel on this section of Interstate 70 in the early mornings until February, it is recommended to check for closure updates on the overhead message boards located east of the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel. In addition to the temporary closures for sun glare safety measures, drivers should also be aware of other factors that can affect their commute. Weather conditions, traffic congestion, and construction projects are all important considerations when planning a trip on Colorado highways. Staying informed and being prepared can help ensure a safe and smooth journey for all travelers.
Remember to always drive cautiously, especially during challenging conditions like sun glare. By following the guidance provided by the Colorado Department of Transportation and staying alert on the road, we can all contribute to safer and more efficient travel experiences. Stay safe out there!
