Media Spain will continue today Thursday in yellow, orange or red warning due to high temperatures, with maximums that will continue to reach 44ºC in some points, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Yesterday the maximum occurred in La Roda de Andalucía (44.6ºC) in Seville, at the Granada airport (44.1ºC), Andújar (43ºC) in Jaén and Arroyo del Ojanco (42.9ºC) in Jaén. The third heat wave of this 2023 is putting almost 25 million people in Spain at risk due to very high temperatures, according to the Eltiempo.es portal. Specifically, more than half of the population lives in areas where citizens were exposed to the heat wave and exceptionally high temperatures yesterday.

Today the Andalusian provinces of Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Málaga and Seville will be at significant risk due to the heat wave, as well as the three Aragonese provinces, Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza, and the Community of Madrid, while that the Balearic Islands will be in yellow notice for the same reason. In Castilla y León, Ávila and Salamanca will be on yellow notice, and, in Castilla-La Mancha, Albacete will be on red notice; Ciudad Real, Cuenca and Guadalajara in orange notice; and Toledo, in yellow notice.

For the same reason, the Catalan provinces of Lleida and Tarragona will be at significant risk; and at risk, in Extremadura, the provinces of Cáceres and Badajoz.

This Thursday the atmospheric situation will tend to stabilize; Today a colder air mass will arrive in the north of the peninsula that will push the warm one, which is what is causing this heat wave. Likewise, temperatures will begin to drop in a large part of the Peninsula, especially in the Bay of Biscay.

However, the wind will prevail from the west, which will cause the thermometers to soar in areas of the Mediterranean. An increase is also expected in western Andalusia and the Balearic Islands. On Thursday the heat warnings are already deactivated in the northwest quadrant of the peninsula, but they extend to the Mediterranean. Specifically, the red warning will be activated in the south of Valencia, in Vega del Segura, Murcia and in Hellín and Almansa, Albacete, due to highs of more than 40ºC or 44ºC.

Although the heat begins to decrease in many areas of the Peninsula, in the Canary Islands it will increase. The warm air mass, accompanied by haze, will invade the archipelago, and the increase in maximum temperatures on Thursday will be very noticeable. In many areas it can exceed 36ºC, and in the southern interior of Gran Canaria, 38ºC.

Friday will be the last day of this heat wave. The warm air mass will continue to withdraw from the Peninsula to the south and, in addition, the wind in the Mediterranean will shift to the maritime component, so temperatures there will drop significantly.
