The Ministry of Equality confirmed this Monday the sexist nature of the murder of Gracia, 49, in the Malaga municipality of Pizarra, bringing the number of women killed at the hands of their partners or ex-partners so far this year to 6; to 1,246 since 2003.
The victim had two children, ages 16 and 23, bringing the number of minors who have been orphaned due to gender violence to 7 so far in 2024 and 439 since 2013.
The crime took place early this Sunday when her ex-partner, a 52-year-old man, shot her in the chest, causing her death on the spot.
After committing the crime, the man left the scene and later committed suicide with the same weapon, according to the Civil Guard, which has reported that there were no previous complaints between the couple.
The event would have taken place around one in the morning on the street where the woman lived with the couple’s two children, ages 16 and 23, in a central area of ??the town.
The victim, 49, and the attacker, 52, had been separated for around ten years and the woman had recently started divorce proceedings.
Shortly before one in the morning, neighbors heard several gunshots and called the Local Police, who were the first to arrive at the scene.
In a statement, the Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo García, and the Government delegate against Gender Violence, Carmen Martínez Perza, have expressed their most absolute condemnation and rejection of this sexist murder and convey all their support to family and friends of the victim.
Both the minister and the delegate ask for all efforts from institutions, administrations and society as a whole to arrive on time and avoid more deaths.
