Google News Outage Impacts Users Worldwide

Google News experienced a significant outage that affected users worldwide earlier today. Users on Downdetector and social media platforms reported issues with the service, noting that no stories were populating on the site. Instead, an upside-down ice cream cone with the message, “Uh-oh, something went wrong. Please try again,” was displayed. The outage was confirmed by users globally, with a spike in reports around 8 AM ET on May 31, 2024.

Many users, including those in the United States and Italy, experienced difficulties accessing Google News on both desktop and mobile platforms. The outage also affected various categories on the site, such as U.S., World, Business, and Technology, displaying empty feeds.

While Google’s Cloud Services and Search Status Dashboard initially did not indicate any issues, a “service interruption” was later reported around serving specific features in Google Search. Google has acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix.

Despite the widespread outage, Google News has since been restored for most users, with the service returning online around 9:50 AM ET on May 31, 2024. While some users reported a temporary return to normalcy followed by another glitch, the service appears to be functioning as expected at the time of this update.
