Authorities in Danielsville, Georgia reported that a 1-year-old girl was killed after she was left in a hot car for more than four hours.

On Thursday, police responded to a call from a Walgreens customer about an infant who was not responding. Capt. Jimmy Patton, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, told CBS News. They arrived to discover the 1-year-old girl unresponsive with her mother.

Patton stated that she took her to a local hospital, where she was declared dead.

Walgreens employee, the mother was dropping off her second child at daycare but forgot to drop her 1-year-old daughter off at a different facility. Patton stated that she drove to work and left her daughter in the car unknowingly.

Although the Madison County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating, no charges have been filed against the mother. Patton said that the case has been referred to the District Attorney for review.

This tragedy occurs just days after a father in Central Virginia committed suicide after accidentally leaving his 18-month old son in a hot car for hours.

“When the father found the child dead in his vehicle, he returned to his home and brought the child into the house. Police released a statement saying that he then left the residence and shot him self.

A 5-year-old boy was killed in a car accident last week in Houston, Texas. It was triple digits outside. Police in Georgia are investigating the deaths of a 3-year old boy under similar circumstances.

Mike Bettes, a meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said to “CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell, that even though it’s 100 degrees outside the temperature inside a vehicle would rise to 119 degrees in 10 minutes. The vehicle’s temperature would reach 134 degrees after half an hour. This is not possible for small children or pets who are strapped into car seats.
