Today the walkways that border Empúries beach, in L’Escala (Alt Empordà), were frozen at 8 in the morning with three degrees of temperature in a cold environment, although with a very clear sky and the sea completely calm , as seen in these photographs in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.

Frost is a meteorological phenomenon that consists of a drop in ambient temperature to levels below the freezing point of water and causes the water or vapor in the air to freeze, depositing it in the form of ice on surfaces, even in the sand of the beach, as in this case in L’Escala.

The extreme case of frost is the black frost, which is when a frost occurs with greater pressure and even causes the plants to be completely destroyed.

The name L’Escala comes from Roman times, Scala, which means dock or place where ships dock. Today we can enjoy the port.

Autumn is a good season to stroll through the old town, without so many crowds of visitors and where there are plenty of narrow streets, most of which lead to the beach. During the tour you can see the Alfolí de la Sal building, the Plaza Mayor, where the church is, and the old salt cemetery. And, of course, you can visit the archaeological site of Empúries.
