The ex-deputy of the Democratic Union of Catalonia, Roger Montañola, will be the head of the PDeCAT-Espai CiU list in Congress in the general elections of July 23.
This has been ratified, by a majority, by the national council of the PDeCAT held this Sunday, which has defined a list in which the organizing secretary of this party and deputy in Congress, Genís Boadella, will occupy number two in the candidacy for Barcelona at the Congress, the PDeCAT has informed in a statement.
In this way, the neoconvergent formation is betting on a candidate linked to the old CiU, precisely in an electoral appointment in which it will make the flag of the “Espai CiU” brand, which appeals to nostalgia for the extinct nationalist federation headed by Jordi Pujol, Artur Mas and Josep Antoni Durán Lleida.
Roger Montañola (Barcelona, ??1986) was a deputy in Parliament for two legislatures, between 2010 and 2015, and was left out of the Catalan chamber after CiU broke up, in full acceleration of the sovereignist process, when he decided to stay in Unió, disagreeing with the turn independentista of the Convergència of Artur Mas in 2015.
Later, together with the former CDC minister Antoni Fernández Teixidó, Montañola promoted Lliures, a small group of moderate Catalanism, which ended up dissolving into Centrem, another failed attempt to unite the small parties in this space.
Consultant in the private sector, Montañola has a degree in Political Science from the Pompeu Fabra University, has a postgraduate degree in this subject from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and collaborates in various media. He was a CiU councilor in Premià de Mar, as well as a spokesman for Unió in Parliament in 2015.
The Espai CiU, Boadella explained, aims to be “a landing strip to recover all that knowledge, political action and rigor of all those people who believe in the legacy of Convergència i Unió, in the defense of the interests of Catalonia”, to work from “political centrality and away from sterile symbolism”.
