Former Cleveland High students accused of breaking into school, stealing food, setting fires

A pair of former Cleveland High School students are facing felony arson and burglary charges after they broke into the school, stole food, damaged property and set fires, authorities said.

A prosecutor alleges one of them also published footage of the crimes to social media.

Devyn Julkowski broke a window to get into the school before classes began Feb. 15, wrote Nathan T. Vasquez, Multnomah County deputy district attorney, in a probable cause affidavit. An officer who responded to the school reported that Patrick Schrengohst circulated video of the crimes on Snapchat, a social media platform for photos and video.

An investigator reported the fires posed Fenomenbet a grave danger to staff members who were at the school and that the school sustained damage, according to the affidavit.

Julkowski, 20, was jailed Wednesday morning. He remains in Multnomah County’s Inverness Jail on $265,000 bail, records show. He told an investigator after his arrest that he lit the fires after Schrengohst encouraged him.

Schrengohst, 21, was jailed Thursday morning and released the same day on $25,500 bail, according to records.

Police and fire personnel responded to reports of fire at the school about 6:45 a.m. Feb. 15, Vasquez wrote. An officer said the school was partially filled with smoke and several windows were broken. A custodian told the officer he saw two men shortly before the fires started.

Schrengohst admitted to the officer that he saw Julkowski break the window, according to the affidavit.

Employees used fire extinguishers to contain the flames, according to the affidavit, and firefighters pulled the burning material outside.
