Florida murder suspect accidentally drowns while fleeing authorities

Authorities said that a man who fled Florida because he was accused of two murders, died Sunday when he accidentally drowned while trying to swim in the Missouri River.

22-year-old Sherron David Mcombs Jr. was swimming in the Current River with several acquaintances when he drowned. A spokesperson for the Missouri State Highway Patrol stated Tuesday.

Troopers were alerted by a caller at 3:00 p.m. to report that a person had fallen under the water but did not come back up. McCombs was pulled from the river by a rescue team shortly after arriving.

Clark Parrott, a spokesperson for the troopers, said that they were unaware at first that McCombs was wanted by Florida. McCombs was using a false name, he believes.

Parrott stated that he had used a false name with them [his friends] because they didn’t have the same information we had. “So one of our troopers had a portable fingerprint identification machine and they were able ID him. That’s when all kinds of alarms started to go off about who this gentleman was.”

Parrott stated that McCombs never interacted with Missouri State Highway Patrol. McCombs may have been working with some of his acquaintances in Memphis, Tennessee. McCombs is about three hours from Parrott. Parrott stated that the group probably came to the river to meet up.

According to Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay, McCombs was on the run since May 6. McCombs was wanted in connection with two murders, which occurred on Nov. 1, 2021 and Jan. 3, 20,22.

For information leading to his arrest and location, a reward of up to $5,000 was offered.
