United Airlines Flight Returns to Chicago After Hitting Coyote

A recent United Airlines flight bound for Phoenix faced an unexpected turn of events on January 12 when the aircraft struck a coyote during takeoff, prompting a diversion back to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The flight, identified as United 1727, was carrying 167 passengers and six crew members on board a Boeing 737 MAX 9 when the incident occurred.

Upon landing safely back in Chicago, a United Airlines spokesperson confirmed the situation, stating that the landing gear of the aircraft had made contact with the coyote during takeoff. To ensure the safety and security of all passengers and crew, the decision was made to return the flight to Chicago for further examination.

Increased Wildlife Strikes at U.S. Airports

This incident sheds light on a broader issue of wildlife strikes at U.S. airports, with more than 17,200 reported cases in 2023 alone, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Over the past three decades, there have been approximately 310,000 recorded collisions between aircraft and animals, predominantly birds.

Coyote Sightings in Chicago

Chicago has recently witnessed a rise in coyote sightings, particularly during the winter months. Animal control officers were called to remove a coyote that had ventured into an Aldi grocery store in the area, highlighting the increased visibility of these animals during their mating season from January to March. Deputy Chief Greg Czernecki of Arlington Heights Police advised residents to take precautions by keeping pets on leashes and securing fenced yards to prevent potential encounters with coyotes.

In light of these incidents, it is crucial for airlines and airport authorities to prioritize wildlife management strategies to safeguard both passengers and wildlife populations. As the skies become busier, proactive measures must be taken to mitigate the risk of collisions and ensure a safe and efficient travel experience for all.
