Fire Breaks Out at Long Island Home Hosting Daycare in Basement

Bright orange flames and thick black smoke engulfed a Long Island home and day care, with children inside, as a fire broke out on 51st Street in Lindenhurst around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The house also served as Mama Rutty’s Day Care, located in the basement, where several children were present when the blaze erupted.

Children Evacuated Safely

Chief Corey Finn of the North Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department mentioned that approximately five kids were inside the day care when the fire started. Thankfully, they were quickly evacuated before the fire department’s arrival, ensuring their safety.

Video footage from a doorbell camera captured neighbors urgently screaming for people to evacuate as the flames spread, emphasizing the chaotic scene as the fire tore through the home. Despite the severity of the situation, a neighbor stepped in to offer comfort to the children by providing warmth and blankets.

Quick Response Amid Challenging Conditions

The fire, exacerbated by strong wind gusts that morning, primarily affected the front of the house. Firefighters managed to contain the flames after an hour-long battle, preventing further damage. Chief Finn highlighted the challenging conditions caused by the wind, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire across the front of the house.

Community Support and Safety

Following the evacuation, the children were taken to a neighbor’s home down the block, where they were comforted and cared for. Despite the destruction of the house, everyone inside managed to escape unharmed, with no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the fire department’s arson squad.

In times of crisis, the community’s swift response and support play a crucial role in ensuring everyone’s safety. The heartwarming actions of neighbors like Camille, who opened their homes to provide comfort and warmth to the children, showcase the resilience and compassion of individuals during challenging situations.

As authorities work to determine the cause of the fire, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and preparedness in homes and facilities like daycares. The successful evacuation of the children underscores the significance of quick thinking and coordinated efforts in safeguarding lives during emergencies.
