The Figueres City Council will begin to distribute free tap aerators starting this Friday to reduce domestic consumption. It is one of the actions that the City Council will have in place to promote the saving of this resource.
Figueres is one of the municipalities that entered the emergency phase on September 26 along with twelve other towns in the Alt Empordà region that are supplied by the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, currently at 11.5% of its capacity.
In an emergency, the maximum consumption per inhabitant per day is 200 liters, a figure that Figueres does not exceed. Even so, since then the City Council has been adopting measures to reduce the consumption of this water resource. The last is the distribution of aerators, small pieces that are placed on faucets, showers or hoses.
In total, it will distribute around 2,000 devices of this type, which the citizen can find in the Municipal Office of Citizen Assistance (OMAC), in the headquarters of the public road cleaning and garbage collection company Fisersa and in the Joaquim Xirau civic centers and Creu de la Mà, during its regular opening hours.
Aside from this action, the City Council has promoted a campaign to detect fraud in the water supply, regularize contracts and control consumption through water meters. With these actions he says they have achieved savings of 30%.
Since last October, it has been using water regenerated by the treatment plant for municipal uses, specifically for irrigation of urban green areas, such as parks, sports fields and the like; street cleaning, fire protection systems and the use of works.
They explain that this measure allows us to continue carrying out, in the face of the drought emergency situation, street cleaning and urban irrigation tasks and serves to save groundwater. The City Council has also been looking for new wells since last September and has put in place a new sanctioning regulation.
The councilor of Medi Ambient, Núria Bartrolich, explains that given the water shortage, the measures that the City Council has begun to apply must end up being “permanent” and go far beyond the current emergency situation.
