The leader of the Canary Islands Coalition (CC), Fernando Clavijo, has been sworn in as president of the Canary Islands in the first vote with the support of 38 deputies, the absolute majority of the plenary session of the regional Parliament, thanks to the pact reached by the nationalists with the PP, ASG and THERE.
The 19 deputies of the CC, the 15 of the PP, the 3 of the Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) and the only deputy of the Agrupación Herreña Independiente (AHI) have voted in favor. 32 deputies have voted against: the 23 deputies from the PSOE, the five from Nueva Canarias and the four from Vox.
Clavijo recovers the Government of the Canary Islands, which he already presided over between 2015 and 2019, then thanks to the support of the PSOE. He succeeds the socialist Ángel Víctor Torres as the presidency of the Canary Islands, whose party was the winner of the May 28 elections, but without the necessary majority to reissue the progressive pact.
Canarian and popular nationalists reached an agreement at the beginning of June, by virtue of which the popular Manuel Domínguez will become vice president of the Government that Clavijo will preside over in the next few days. It so happens that the Canary Islands Coalition was not the most voted party in the Canary Islands in the regional elections on May 28, a position that fell to the PSOE. However, from the same election night, it became known that the Socialists could not repeat the alliance with Nueva Canarias, Podemos and the AGS, which allowed them to reach the Government.
With this pact, Clavijo achieves his goal that he had been pursuing for at least 4 years, when he tried to close a pact with the PP, which was finally frustrated by Ciudadanos. The orange team vetoed the Canarian leader in the middle of the electoral campaign for his alleged involvement in two cases of prevarication, the so-called Cranes and repairs cases. In this way, it was the PSOE that came to power in 2019.
The candidate finally chosen by the chamber wanted to express his gratitude for the support received from the 4 groups that support him. “They have put the general interest of the citizenry, the commitment and a government program that aims to put the citizen at the center of the system above the initials”, he stressed. With these statements, Clavijo highlights his intention to create a union that does politics to serve the citizen.
The leaders who have supported him in the institutions have also taken the floor. Casimiro Curbelo, head of the Gomera Socialist Group, thanked his “exercise of coherence”, which means “putting people above pacts and support for parties”. On the other hand, the president of the PP in the Canary Islands and future vice president, Manuel Domínguez, wanted to reaffirm the mutual respect he has for Clavijo and recalled that, although they have had to deal with very complex scenarios, there has always been very cordial treatment on both sides. .
