Two years after his accession to the presidency of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo met this Tuesday with the party’s national board of directors, the highest body between congresses, to kick off the imminent electoral cycle, which begins in Basque Country this April, continues in Catalonia in May and concludes in the European Parliament in June. A spring at the polls.

In all three cases the prospects for the PP are positive, especially in the European elections, in which it hopes to obtain a comfortable lead over the PSOE and contribute to the victory of the European Popular Party, which, according to all the polls, will once again be the first force in Brussels. But also in Catalonia, where the current three deputies in the Parliament can multiply by five and reach fifteen.

Once this cycle is over, the popular ones trust that the wear and tear of Pedro Sánchez, forced to agree with the Basque and Catalan nationalists and independentists in the autonomous parliaments of Vitoria and Barcelona, ??which will negatively condition, they hope, the arithmetic in Congress, will lead to the President of the Government to precipitate the general elections just a year after being inaugurated.

However, Feijóo did not want to err on the side of triumphalism, because, in his opinion, Sánchez will not leave Moncloa unless his partners force him to. The electoral call should depend on the president, but Sánchez, the head of the opposition has stated, “does not have freedom”, since it is not granted to him by his parliamentary allies, the Basque and Catalan independentists.

Led by Alejandro Fernández, once confirmed as the PP candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat in the elections on May 12, the Catalan delegation has been numerous: Dolors Montserrat, Daniel Sirera, Manu Reyes, Santi Rodríguez and Xavier García Albiol have arrived at the headquarters on Génova Street with Fernández and have offered an image of unity after the tensions experienced by the long suspense over the leader.

After recognizing that the PP does not aspire to win either in Catalonia or in Euskadi, Feijóo has defended that in no case should it “put a ceiling” on its aspirations in both territories and has given his full support to Alejandro Fernández in the face of the challenge he faces. faces: offering itself as the alternative to Catalans “fed up with the drift to nowhere” of the independence process, the cause of the “decadence” of the community.

In this sense, the popular leader wanted to close ranks after the disagreement with Fernández as a result of the PP’s approach to Junts and has praised his candidate in Catalonia, who “has dedicated his political career” to defending the Constitution, as stressed by Feijóo, who has also referred to the validity of the Statute although his party opposed the reform currently in force. Given the PSC’s “companionship” with sovereignism, “no vote from the Catalan PP will serve for independence,” he has stressed.

The conclave, in any case, has served for the popular to congratulate themselves on the electoral achievements of the two years of Feijóo’s presidency, which exhibits levels of municipal and regional power much higher than those it had during Pablo Casado’s stage. but who, he has acknowledged, is missing the icing on the cake of reaching Moncloa despite having won the general elections in seats and having left the shadow of Vox far behind: “When I arrived Feijóo and four others governed, and today almost all of you govern but not Feijóo”, he concluded. “We have a task ahead of us,” he encouraged those present.
