This morning Alberto Núñez Feijóo presented the PP candidacy for the European elections, headed by Dolors Montserrat, also with the presence of the president of the Popular European Party, Manfred Weber. In his speech, he indicated that on the next 9-J Spain must go to vote “in legitimate defense”, to confront both the “egocentrism” of Pedro Sánchez, who uses the country “for his privileges”, and also against the “exclusive ideology”, referring to Carles Puigdemont.
The message he has launched, with this idea of ??voting in “legitimate defense”, is similar, with nuances, to the slogan “in self-defense” that Vox is using in the Catalan campaign. The president of the PP has also referred to the need to unite the vote around his party – both in Catalan and European terms – since dividing it means losing seats. He already made this call six days ago in Catalonia, when the polls began to indicate the electoral resistance of the ultra-right. A resistance that the polls continue to show one day before the closing of the Catalan campaign and that involves the dispute of the votes on the border between both parties.
In the presentation of the European candidacy, messages converged in a European, Spanish and Catalan key, with the common denominator of confronting both President Pedro Sánchez and the independence movement. Feijóo has thus pointed out that Catalonia is the best place to show the commitment to Spain and to Europe, “to give voice to those who” the socialists and independentists have wanted to impose a single thought.
In a Catalan key, Feijóo has stressed that the step that the PP will take on the next 12-M will be “big or very big”, a firm step to consolidate in the Parliament “the convictions and principles” with which this formation agrees. The Catalan candidate, Alejandro Fernández, also took the floor, who in this double European and Catalan key has defended the pro-European vocation of Catalonia against those who “flirted with those who want to destabilize Europe”, wanting to refer to the ties of the independence movement with Russia. . Also with this double message. Dolors Montserrat has highlighted the defense that her party has made in the EU of the “Rule of Law against the impunity of the amnesty”. And she has asked Manfred Weber to help prevent the law from going ahead.
The president of the European Popular Party has been significant in recent months in his position against the amnesty, with an explicit confrontation with Pedro Sánchez, whom he has reproached for his negotiations with Carles Puigdemont. For this reason, in the presentation of the European candidacy in Barcelona, ??Weber has thoroughly attacked Sánchez’s decision to meditate on his future and the five-day crisis. The German president has stressed that no European prime minister should ever be absent from his duties, something that would be impossible in countries like “France or Germany.” This attitude corresponds more “to that of a showman than to that of a statesman,” he stressed.
The key Catalan, Spanish and European representatives met today at the Sant Pau Modernist Campus, led by the PP. The results of 12-M, and the distribution of forces between the Popular Party and Vox, can also be read in code 9-J.
