Eva Baró will be the new president of the Barcelona federation of ERC. The candidacy “La Barcelona de totes”, which leads the councilor in the City Council of the Catalan capital, has been imposed on that of “Horitzó Barcelona”, headed by the current Secretary General of Government Education, Patrícia Gomà. The results have been adjusted: 365 votes – 50% of the votes cast – for the first; 342 votes – 47% – for the second. Only 23 difference. maximum division Just over a thousand militants were called to participate in this Friday’s telematic voting.

Baró has taken the lead in the elections of one of Esquerra’s main federations. He will replace Gerard Gómez del Moral in the position. Even so, the national leadership will open a dialogue process to incorporate members of the other list into the regional executive. The party’s statutes require this to be the case as long as the winning option has not obtained more than 55% of the votes cast. Of the 15 members of the regional leadership, up to 4 would have to be from the losing list.

The new president belonged to the party’s national executive. A fact that has served as an excuse for her rivals to consider her “continuist” or “officialist” and that Baró’s team denies. The candidacy has, among others, Joan Ignasi Elena, Minister of the Interior, former councilor Montse Benedí or the deputy in Parliament José Rodríguez, and with the endorsement of Carme Forcadell.

Gomà, on the other hand, has raised the flag of the “militancy” list, built “from the bottom up” and despite ensuring that she is not “anti-Junquerista” she has been critical of the decision-making processes of the national leadership.

In this sense, for example, Gomà has criticized that the pact to form part of the government of the Barcelona Provincial Council together with the PSC and the commons was decided without consultation or prior notice to the bases. Baró, in fact, is one of the vice presidents of the Provincial Council, so she reinforces the idea, according to “Horitzó Barcelona” that her candidacy is related to Junqueras’ leadership.

ERC is holding a regional conference this Saturday at the Jaume Fuster library in which it will make the new regional direction official. The last time that two candidates had faced each other at the polls to lead the Barcelona federation of the party was in 2008. One of the issues that will surely be on the table is the possible replacement of Ernest Maragall as a candidate in the next municipal elections. for Barcelona City Council. On this point there has been no disagreement between the two candidates.
