The Turkish president, the conservative Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdogan, signed this Monday the protocol of ratification of Sweden’s accession to NATO and delivered it to Parliament for voting, reported the communication office of the Turkish Presidency in Ankara.

Erdogan had indicated in recent weeks that – after months of blockade – he will give his approval to the Nordic country’s access “if the US keeps its promises”, although he always clarified that the final decision will be made in Parliament, where his party, the AKP , has a majority together with its ally, the ultranationalist MHP.

Among the American “promises” alleged by Erdogan could include some of the requests made to Washington by the Turkish leader, including the sale of F-16 fighters blocked for years by the US Congress.
