More than a hundred entities have warned this afternoon that the terrorism investigation of those prosecuted by Tsunami Democràtic “criminalizes the right to protest, limits fundamental rights and silences political dissidence.” This is stated in a manifesto signed by 144 civil society organizations, where they add that the investigation by the National Court is an action “of an authoritarian nature that restricts the space of civil society and endangers democratic principles and the state of right”. Furthermore, they denounce the “clear intention” to “wear down the state government and the parliamentary majority in the processing of the amnesty.”
In addition to the nearly 150 entities, the manifesto has the support of more than 200 personalities from the world of politics, culture and journalism, with names such as Jordi Évole, Carlos Bardem, Clara Peya, Eduard Farelo, Laura Rosel, Lildami or Marina Rossell.
The signatories of the manifesto denounce “the escalation” against the right to protest and assure that the investigation against Tsunami is “a direct attack on the exercise of fundamental rights”, especially the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression and information. “It is a new example of the extensive application of the Penal Code in the criminalization of protest,” they warn. Precisely for this reason they demand that “the use of justice in a new political persecution” be stopped and that the accusations of terrorism be withdrawn.
In the text they assure that criminalization has “a deterrent effect” towards the entire society because “it persecutes the main mechanism through which rights and freedoms are defended.” In fact, they point out that this affects “all types of groups and organizations”, whether unionized, feminist, independentist, environmentalist or anti-racist entities.
Furthermore, they insist that Tsunami is “a peaceful movement” and emphasize that the actions that were carried out “were part of the non-violent struggle.”
The manifesto was made public this Monday at an event in Barcelona’s Plaza del Rey. Those in charge of reading it have been Jordi Évole, Mònica Terribas, Jordi Basté, Ana Polo, Gemma Garcia and Laura Rosel. Apart from them, the text has received the support of other personalities such as Andreu Buenafuente, Aina Clotet, Bonaventura Clotet, Carles Porta, Elena Gadel, Mushkaa, Lluís Llach, Marc Sanjaume, Miki Esparbé and Queco Novell, among others.
The manifesto has also been signed by entities such as the ANC, CCOO Catalunya, the CGT, the CNJC, Élite Taxi, s, Òmnium, Platform for the Language or Union of Peasants.
