The third and final stage of the women’s Tour of the Pyrenees has been canceled for security reasons, after several teams reported last Friday problems that endangered the physical integrity of the runners. The organization has ended the race, leaving the general classification as it was, with the Italian Marta Cavalli as the winner.
In the last few hours, there have been reports of the danger for the runners during the route, open to traffic and in which the cyclists have had to go around the vehicles, endangering their physical integrity. There are many images that have circulated through social networks as the outrage between athletes and fans grew.
The International Cycling Union (UCI) made official the cancellation of the motivated stage to “guarantee the safety of the runners”. “The UCI has made the decision to stop the Tour of the Pyrenees. After consulting the main sectors of the event: the CPA Women, the CPA with its president Adam Hansen, the teams, stewards and the organizing committee, the day’s stage will not take place,” the UCI said.
This morning several teams, such as Jumbo-Visma, Israel Premier Tech Roland and Bizkaia Durango, had already made the decision to abandon the event. The Italian Marta Cavalli, leader of the race after the second stage, will be the winner of the test.
