Sevilla has made official the hiring of Diego Alonso as the new coach of the Andalusian team. The Uruguayan coach signs with the Nervión team until the end of this season and will lead his first training session today at seven in the afternoon. In this way, the preferred option of Sevilla’s sporting director, Víctor Orta, lands at Sánchez Pizjuán, despite the fact that the club’s leadership also considered hiring Marcelino García Toral, among others, according to Relevo.

Alonso has experience as a coach in the First Division of Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as in the Mexican league with Monterrey and Pachuca, a team with which he has coached the most games (173), and Inter Miami of the MLS. Regarding his record, he has two Concacaf Champions League wins with Pachuca (2016-17) and one with Monterrey (2018-19). He has also been champion of a Mexican Clausura Tournament with Pachuca (2015-16).

His last task was to captain the Uruguayan team in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in December, after previously qualifying, thanks to the good results obtained in the South American phase. However, the ‘Charrúa’ team said goodbye in the group stage of the main international tournament for national teams in the world.

On the other hand, Diego Alonso played in the past in Spain. In the First Division, with Valencia, Racing de Santander and Málaga; in the Second Division with Atlético de Madrid, a team from which he left in the 2001-02 season, and Real Murcia, where he finished his career in the country.

The arrival of Diego Alonso to Nervión has as a precedent the dismissal of José Luis Mendilibar last Sunday, after the 2-2 draw against Rayo Vallecano on the last day of the league. The Basque coach did not remain in office, despite winning the seventh Europa League for the Sevilla entity last year: a title that earned him a renewal until June 2024. However, the poor results obtained throughout this new campaign have condemned Mendilibar.

“I am also proud to become a small part of the history of this great club.” The Basque coach concluded by remembering the conquest of the Europa League.

In this way, Diego Alonso finds himself in his first experience in Europe with his new team, fourteenth in the LaLiga standings with eight points, just two points behind Celta, which marks the relegation zone with six. Likewise, Sevilla is third in group B of the Champions League with two points: one behind Arsenal, second, and two behind the leader Lens. In addition, their first official match will be on October 21 on the occasion of the tenth round of the national championship against Real Madrid at home, after the national team break.
