The future of David De Gea seemed to remain linked to Manchester United, after the goalkeeper signed the renewal proposal at the bottom, but the English entity, against the odds, withdrew the offer before the leaders of the red devils put the signature on the new contract, as explained by the British media The Athletic.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper ends his contract on June 30 and both his salary and his performance, despite being named gold glove of the season in the Premier League, have made United’s leaders doubt, who have transferred him a new proposal to De Gea that further reduces his salary.

De Gea was the highest paid goalkeeper in the world and the highest paid Spanish player, with a salary of more than 450,000 euros a week. Until recently he was considered a key piece of the team, but in recent seasons he has been losing that consideration and United is considering a change in goal.

United has probed the signing of André Onana, the starting goalkeeper for Inter Milan, runner-up in the Champions League. For his part, De Gea wants to continue playing at a high level despite having an offer from Saudi Arabia, with better economic conditions, according to The Athletic. At the moment, the Manchester club and the goalkeeper are still negotiating.

It is not the first time in his career that De Gea’s future has taken an unexpected turn. The goalkeeper was practically signed by Real Madrid, but the fax that had to confirm his transfer from United to the whites arrived a few minutes late, already completed on August 31, 2015, the deadline for transfers in the summer market.

After that script change, De Gea ended up signing several contract renewals that made him one of the highest paid in the Premier. The Spaniard, already a benchmark in the last days of United, completed his twelfth season with the team this season, since his arrival at the club in 2011.
