Days of fog and lenticular clouds

These are days of fog and lenticular clouds in the heart of Catalonia, in regions such as Ripollès, Berguedà or Osona, especially in the latter, as can be seen in this series of photographic reports in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.

In these first snapshots we can see the lenticular clouds and fogs in the Plana de Vic, in images captured in the surroundings of Manlleu.

The lenticular cloud is shaped like a lentil, as its name indicates, or like a saucer or converging lens. They are stationary and form at high altitudes in mountainous areas and isolated from other clouds.

Among mountaineers, these clouds are considered a harbinger of a storm, something that has happened these days in Catalonia in the area where the snapshots were captured.

With these clouds you will like: on the one hand, glider pilots continually look for this type of clouds because the atmospheric system that forms them involves large vertical movements of air (the world record for distance gliding flight: 3000 km, and altitude: 14,938 m, were obtained with this type of clouds). But on the other hand, airline pilots avoid them due to the turbulence created in the rotor systems.

Osona is the area of ??Spain with the most foggy days a year, at least a hundred. This meteorological phenomenon covers the entire landscape. It goes by several names, from the Pubilla de la Plana de Vic to the joke baixa.

If the meteorological phenomenon gives a vision of 1 km or less, it is considered fog; and if it allows you to see more than 1 km, the phenomenon is fog.

In Montseny the fog merges with the spectacular autumnal colors of the forest. This can be seen in Fogars de Montclús, in Vallès Oriental.

Apart from the natural mountain environment, in Fogars de Montclús we find a heritage of small churches: San Cristóbal de Fogás, Romanesque; San Esteban de la Costa; Romanesque, from the 12th century, it holds a Gothic image of the Virgen de los Ángeles from the 14th century; San Martín de Mosqueroles, with pieces of goldsmithing from the 16th and 17th centuries; the Hermitage of Santa Magdalena (XI century); and the Hermitage of Santa Fe del Montseny, documented in 1231.

In this other photographic report we can see the Pubilla de Osona, the mothers of fog, from the Serragrenyada de Sant Pere de Torelló.

Serragrenyada is a very popular viewpoint for hikers. In fact, popular walks are organized to crown it. There is also a circular route (Bellmunt – Puig de Serragrenyada – Collet Balma de Migó), which covers a total of 11.4 kilometers around Sant Pere de Torelló.

The landscape until you reach the Serragrenyada is populated with a multitude of wild flowers and in autumn you can enjoy all the colors of this season of the year.
