Yesterday, Crupra unveiled its new product offensive that confirms that it will play a prevalent role within the Seat group, leading the transformation towards the electric vehicle. He presented the future urban electric vehicle that it will share with other brands of the Volkswagen group, will be manufactured in Martorell and justifies the installation of a battery plant in Sagunt (Valencia) and the Perte aid (strategic plan for the recovery and transformation of the economy ). It will be built on the basis of the UrbanRebel prototype, it will be manufactured in Martorell and it will be launched in 2025.
Before that, new electrified Cupra models will arrive: in 2024 the Cupra Terramar and the Tavascan, and in 2025 the UrbanRebel, along with a renewal of the current range. “Tonight we show all the models that are part of the next generation of Cupra heroes that will arrive between now and 2025,” said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra and Seat. “Our medium-term goal is to deliver 500,000 cars a year and drive our international expansion into new markets, as well as enter new segments. We have a fully committed Cupra Tribe to make this happen,” he added. A very ambitious goal if you take into account that in 2021 the joint sales of Seat and Cupra were 470,500 vehicles. And those of Cupra were 79,300 units, so the target of 500,000 represents an increase of more than 500%.
The presentation was made at the old Terramar car circuit in Sitges, the same setting where the great display of Cupra began four years ago. To date, the brand has delivered close to 200,000 units, while its turnover has gone from 430 million euros in 2018 to almost 2,200 million euros in 2021. This 2022 aims to double its sales, its turnover and its global network.
The event, called Unstoppable Impulse, brought together several hundred people, including members of the Volkswagen shareholder families (Porsche and Piëch) and top managers of the German group. The take-off of the brand began in 2018 with the challenge of developing its sporty character, capable of attracting a different customer than Seat and also to obtain a higher profit margin per vehicle. Its first model was the Cupra Ateca, which was joined two years later by the Cupra León. It was their first electrified model with a plug-in hybrid motor. The first vehicle developed exclusively by Cupra is the Formentor, which with almost 100,000 units is the best-selling model to date. And the first pure electric is the Born, which is manufactured in Germany and is now in the launch phase.
The Cupra Terramar is a sports SUV that aims to pay homage to the well-known Sitges circuit and will be manufactured in Hungary, at Audi’s Györ plant. It will be available with combustion engines, as well as a new generation of plug-in hybrid powertrains that offer around 100 kilometers of range in purely electric mode. “It perfectly combines striking proportions with an elongated bonnet and a shark nose, which represent the determination to win,” said Jorge Díez, Cupra design director.
The next step will be fully electric with the Cupra Tavascán SUV and in 2025 the Urban Rebel, with an urban style.
