The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Mukhtar Babayev, announced this Saturday that “there is consensus” for the country to host the next Climate Summit (COP29), which will be held next year, after its rival Armenia withdraw his candidacy.

“I am pleased to announce that there is consensus for the acceptance of Azerbaijan’s candidacy to host COP29,” Babayev said during a speech before the plenary session, in which he reiterated the nation’s commitment to green energy and emissions reduction. This announcement must be confirmed officially: foreseeably, at the end of this conference.

Two days ago, Azerbaijan’s adversary Armenia pledged to voluntarily withdraw its bid to host the next climate summit and expressed confidence that Baku would receive international support as a possible host of this event.

If this announcement is confirmed, the climate summit will be held for the third consecutive year by a country that produces oil or gas, one of the main causes of global warming.
