Bill Gilfillen, a retired Navy Master Chief and long-time San Marcos resident, has been dazzling his neighborhood with Christmas decorations for 38 years. What started as a childhood dream inspired by his humble beginnings has turned into a beloved tradition that has become a part of San Marcos lore.
Every year, Gilfillen transforms his home into a winter wonderland, complete with thousands of lights and ornamentals that bring joy to both children and adults. His decorations have even played a role in some heartwarming moments, like a marriage proposal that took place right in front of his house, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers who erupted into applause.
Last year, the Knob Hill community missed out on Gilfillen’s display due to his recovery from back surgery. This year, things were looking bleak until a neighbor noticed Gilfillen working tirelessly to put up his decorations once again. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, over 300 people reached out to offer their help after Gilfillen posted a plea for assistance on Facebook.
With the support of five trusted friends, Gilfillen was able to get his Christmas display up and running once again. Despite being 86 years old, he continues to oversee the operation, ensuring that the lights shine bright for everyone to enjoy.
“It’s not just for the little folks, it’s for older folks too,” Gilfillen said, highlighting the fact that his decorations bring joy to people of all ages. The sense of community that has come together to support him in his time of need is a true testament to the impact that one person’s dedication and passion can have on an entire neighborhood.
