Columbia University Deans Placed on Leave for Conduct at Antisemitism Panel

Columbia University recently made the decision to place three administrators on leave after leaked images revealed that they were sharing disparaging text messages during a panel discussion about antisemitism on campus. The incident took place during a Columbia College reunion on May 31, where tensions over Israel’s war in Gaza were a central topic of discussion.

The officials who were placed on leave have not been officially identified by the university spokesman. However, reports from The Washington Free Beacon suggest that Susan Chang-Kim, the vice dean and chief administrative officer; Cristen Kromm, the dean of undergraduate student life; and Matthew Patashnick, the associate dean for student and family support, were involved in the controversial text exchanges.

One of the administrators, Ms. Chang-Kim, was reported to have exchanged texts with Josef Sorett, the dean of Columbia College, during the event. In one particular exchange, Mr. Sorett responded with “LMAO” to a sarcastic message from Ms. Chang-Kim about Brian Cohen, the executive director of Columbia/Barnard Hillel. Mr. Sorett is said to be cooperating with the investigation into the text exchanges, and will be recused from matters related to the investigation while still serving as dean.

As the dean of Columbia College, Mr. Sorett plays a crucial role in overseeing the curriculum and ensuring that students have a positive experience both inside and outside the classroom. The university’s website highlights his responsibility in providing students with the best possible educational environment.

This recent controversy at Columbia University is just one in a series of incidents that have occurred since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict last fall. The university has faced criticism and scrutiny for its handling of discussions surrounding antisemitism and Jewish life on campus.

The decision to place the administrators on leave reflects the university’s commitment to addressing issues of discrimination and intolerance within the academic community. It also underscores the importance of upholding a respectful and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their background or beliefs.

Moving forward, Columbia University will need to take proactive measures to address the underlying issues that led to this incident and work towards fostering a more respectful and tolerant campus culture. By holding individuals accountable for their actions and promoting open dialogue and understanding, the university can strive towards creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of its community.
