The tactical urbanism of Pelai street has its days numbered. Barcelona City Council has announced that it will install parking spaces for bicycles and motorcycles, as well as new loading and unloading points, in the pedestrian area of ??the central street due to its “non-existent” use.

This was explained by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Ecological Transition, Urban Services and Housing, Laia Bonet, who maintains that, since its inception, “informal uses other than those planned” have grown in the pedestrian space, such as loading and unloading. Thus, according to Bonet, the reform will fulfill two functions: gain parking space and free the sidewalk for bicycles and motorcycles.

According to a statement from the town hall, the reform will create a new lane for 64 parking spaces for motorcycles, 72 parking spaces for bicycles and 20 DUM spaces for loading and unloading, after completing the works, which are expected to last one week.

The City Council has explained that the works do not foresee affectations in the traffic lanes nor have they planned to modify the pedestrian space on the sidewalk.

They will focus on the section between Plaza Universitat and Calle Balmes, where the new loading and unloading spaces will be used, and between Balmes and Plaza Catalunya, where the loading and unloading spaces will be maintained and parking spaces for bikes and motorcycles will be created. .

The transformation is part of the Endreça Plan that Bonet and the security councilor, Albert Batlle, will present on July 26 to modify the tactical urbanism of the city.
