I captured this snapshot of David and Goliath in the sea from Gavà beach, in Baix Llobregat. We can see in the Photos of La Vanguardia Readers the spectacular ocean liner with a small boat beside it.
The comparison of the image highlights the enormous size of the cruise ship, as all of us who observed it from the coast saw it.
According to the Bible, Goliath was a giant Philistine warrior defeated by the young David in combat between the two. In this case, the two ships (large and small) do not compete, but rather coexist in the Mediterranean, where the port of Barcelona stands out for its cruise traffic.
The phrase “David versus Goliath” refers to an imbalanced situation, a contest in which a smaller, weaker opponent faces a much larger and stronger opponent.
Cruise activity is on the rise again in Barcelona after the Covid stoppage. The city will collect six times more in 2023 than in 2019 from cruises. A study by the UB estimates that this activity accounts for 4.1% of the visitors that the Catalan capital receives.
