Chicago Cubs’ Nico Hoerner to Undergo Further Testing on Right Hand After X-rays are ‘Somewhat Inconclusive’
CINCINNATI — Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner is facing uncertainty after being hit by a pitch on his right hand during Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. The incident occurred during the fourth inning when Reds starter Hunter Greene’s 96.5-mph pitch struck Hoerner on the back of his right hand.
Despite staying in the game after the incident, postgame X-rays were inconclusive, leading to further testing for Hoerner. Manager Craig Counsell mentioned that Hoerner was unable to grip and swing the bat as usual when he arrived at the ballpark the next day. As a result, David Bote took his place in the lineup while Hoerner prepared for additional tests, including a CT scan.
While Hoerner was optimistic about his condition, citing his ability to finish the game after the injury, his past experiences with a hairline fracture in his right wrist in 2019 raised concerns. The Cubs are closely monitoring his situation to determine the extent of the injury and the necessary course of action.
In addition to Hoerner’s injury, the Cubs made three roster moves on Friday. Left-hander Jordan Wicks and right-hander Keegan Thompson were activated from the injured list, with Thompson being optioned to Triple-A Iowa along with right-hander Porter Hodge. Wicks, who has primarily been a starter throughout his career, is now transitioning to a bullpen role for the Cubs.
Wicks expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute in a different capacity and emphasized the importance of staying prepared and helping the team win games. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new role, Wicks remains focused on making a positive impact on the team’s performance.
As Hoerner awaits further test results and Wicks prepares for his bullpen duties, the Cubs are navigating through roster changes and player adjustments to maintain their competitive edge in the league. The team’s resilience and adaptability will be key factors as they strive for success in the remainder of the season.
