A group of computer scientists from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and researchers from the University of Alicante (UA) have created MedusApp, a jellyfish-watching application that also differentiates the species.

It is a completely free app available for iOS and Android; through it you can consult the sightings of jellyfish and the degree of toxin of the species present on Spanish beaches.

The application collects data about the presence of jellyfish on the coasts of our country: “Every time you see a jellyfish stranded on the beach, or in the sea, and you send it to us here, it can be seen publicly on the map, the that you have available on this website or on the map of the application itself” indicates its official page.

The interactive map can be consulted at any time to check the sightings in the desired area. Each sighting of jellyfish or other objects is an icon, and each time someone reports a “jellyfish-free beach” a green dot appears. In addition, it is worth knowing that by default only the information from the last few days appears, although you have filters by species and by date to refine your search.

The website itself states that the color of the icon’s halo indicates how stinging its bite is. There are non-stinging (white), slightly stinging (yellow), stinging (orange) and very stinging (red). Finally, if you see the jellyfish icon in gray, it means that it is an uncertified sighting, either because it cannot be guaranteed that the species portrayed is the one indicated, or because it was not sent directly (live photo and with GPS coordinates), but through the gallery and with manual location indication.
