Last April was accompanied by high temperatures and low rainfall, causing Spain to not be able to get out of the episode of drought that is plaguing the country. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) made it clear: it is “a monthly maximum temperature record for mainland Spain”, bordering on 39 ºC in points of Andalusia.
Despite the fact that the temperatures will continue to be generally high, the beginning of May could bring some relief to our country. Finally, there will be a drop in temperatures accompanied by showers, although unfortunately there will be a thermal fluctuation and rainfall will generally be scarce, at least during the first half of the week. Next, we reveal what the weather will be like in our country for the next few days.
A generally dry week is presented, since the forecasts do not show precipitations neither for today, Tuesday May 2, nor for Wednesday. On Thursday some rains could arrive in western Galicia, but if they do, they will be insignificant. However, the arrival of a storm on the peninsula this Friday could bring new rains, which will arrive in the west of the peninsula, spreading to more areas of the country.
The expected rains have put Catalonia at risk of yellow, where they are expected to arrive with intensity accompanied by hail. Likewise, the showers could reach points in the eastern Cantabrian Sea, north of Navarra, the Pyrenees and some islands of the Balearic archipelago. Regarding temperatures, the Aemet forecasts a drop in the maximum in the Mediterranean area, although they will rise on the Atlantic slope.
The storms that could touch the Peninsula this week, especially in the Atlantic, will come hand in hand with gusts of cold air and precipitation, which will spread across the north of the peninsula. The meteorologist Mario Picazo points out: “We will see more activity with the passage of several frontal systems throughout the week, and with the incursion of colder air to help generate those clouds and precipitation, especially in coastal areas of western Galicia” .
As for the second week of May, it is likely that the cloudiness and rainfall will extend to the entire northwest half of the peninsula, the most abundant corresponding to the west of Galicia. In addition, the rains will gain prominence for the week of May 8 to 14, where they are expected in the north and west of the peninsula, exceeding normal values.
Rubén del Campo, Aemet spokesman, fears that the drought will continue to plague our country in the coming months, since it is highly probable that the drought will not end until after the summer, so a somewhat complex season awaits us; in fact, experts point out that half a dozen rainy episodes like the one experienced yesterday would be needed to alleviate the drought during the month of May.
