Cecilia Priego, actress of 'La Reina del Sur', dies due to cancer

Tragic news for the entertainment world in Mexico. Through the magazine Vanitatis, the death of actress Cecilia Priego, known for her role in the soap opera La Reina del Sur, based on the novel of the same name by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, has been announced. Priego died this past weekend at the age of 36, as a result of cervical cancer that she had been dealing with for the last two and a half years.

“I don’t remember the day, the time, but since this battle of your illness began, I began to always write thanking God for your falls and your rises, I understood that it was not easy for you or for us, but you always demonstrated your strength, your faith, your desire to live as a tireless warrior and you defeated this disease twice,” her father, the singer Freddy Persa, published on Facebook, who was in charge of announcing the loss.

“Today my flock is very sad. One of my sheep is leaving me. I am sure that God will take it into his own. I thank you, sir, for lending her to me, I return her to you because, I am sure, she will be in a better place. Today the curtain closes for you on earth, but we are sure that your presence and your legacy will transcend beyond and you will continue your project in heaven,” concluded Persa, who has been in charge of conveying the news to the rest of the world.

Originally from the city of Tabasco, Priego founded her own theater company there, Teatro en 30, which has also reacted to her death. “It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the death of our operational director: Cecilia Priego. The Teatro en 30 family mourns her passing and offers her condolences to her family and loved ones. Her memory will live in our hearts forever. Fly high, Cecy,” read the text on its official website.

Priego has appeared in many television series, such as Lo que callamos las mujeres, Pobre Diabla or Ámsterdam, the latter on HBO Max. However, the actress rose to fame with her role in La Reina del Sur, the Telemundo series based on the novel that Pérez-Reverte published in 2002. With a budget of ten million dollars, its first season was the most expensive produced to date by the Mexican chain.

The Queen of the South tells the story of Teresa Mendoza, a young woman from the state of Sinaloa whose life takes a 180 turn when her partner, El Güero Dávila, introduces her to the world of drugs. One day, after receiving a call from her partner warning her of her death, Teresa must flee from her and begin a long and winding path to overcome the dangers that threaten her. The series has three highly successful seasons in Mexico.
