King Carlos III dedicated an emotional tribute to his mother, the late Elizabeth II, in his first speech to the country after taking office: “Mom, as you begin your long journey to join my dear dad, I want to say thank you for your love for our family and the family of nations.

The new British monarch said this Friday that, by assuming the head of state, he renews the “promise of service throughout his life” that his mother, the late Elizabeth II, fulfilled in her 70-year reign.

The new king of Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries promised this Friday to “maintain the constitutional principles” that govern his country and to serve citizens “loyally, with respect and with love” now that he assumes the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

In his first speech as the new monarch, recorded at Buckingham Palace and broadcast to the entire country just 24 hours after the death of his mother, Charles of England ratified his full will to “assume the new responsibility” as king and pointed out that “the duties of the monarchy continue” now in his person.

“I solemnly commit to uphold those constitutional principles for as long as God keeps me alive,” he said. “Regardless of your origins or beliefs, I will serve you with loyalty, with respect and with love, just as I have done all my life.”
