David Torrents, councilor in Badalona and candidate for the organization secretary of Junts per Catalunya in the congress that took place last Saturday in Argelers, will remain, for now, outside the party’s executive.
The pro-independence leader, proposed by Laura Borràs, narrowly failed to meet the requirements imposed by the regulations of the conclave of his formation – obtain 50% of the votes – and now it is up to the new secretary general, Jordi Turull, to make a proposal to the militancy in less than a month.
The former minister, during an interview on Catalunya Ràdio, has indicated this Tuesday that they will comply with the provisions of the regulation, without clarifying, in any case, whether or not he would propose Torrents for the position or if he would opt for a different profile. In any case, he has shown “empathy” towards the Badalona councilor and has directed “praise” at him, he has assured that they have “a lot of chemistry” about how they see things in the party and he has said that he is “effective”. However, Turull has said that he will listen to various people before making a decision.
The same Saturday, after Torrents himself and the deputy of the Parlament Ester Vallès were left out of the executive due to lack of support, it was said that there was an agreement for both to become part of the management in the same way since there was no candidacy rival. However, from that very moment, party cadres and territorial organizations were against this possibility since in the territory, in local internal processes, there are people who with similar regulations were left out. Thus, the rules of the match will be applied.
On the other hand, the new leader of Junts has minimized the fact that he obtained more support than Borràs in the congress, and has pointed out that they were not competing and that in any case there would have to be talk of a tie. “We did not compete. It is a tie and a success for the unitary candidacy,” Turull summed up, revealing that last night he worked side by side with the already president of JxCat to prepare the first meeting of the new executive, who will take place this afternoon in a hotel in Barcelona.
In the case of Torrents, it is clear how to proceed. However, the question remains as to what the procedure is for Vallès and for the former Minister Miquel Sàmper, who does not become part of the Junts executive because his position in the Government, in the Comissió Jurídica Assessora, prevents him from being in the leadership of a political party. This afternoon, at the executive meeting, these and other issues will be discussed.
Regarding the words of one of the vice presidents of the party, Aurora Madaula, shared by Borràs later, Turull has avoided speaking out. The third secretary of the Parliamentary Bureau also attributed the low support she received, below 50%, to the fact that she continues to defend independence and that annoys her.
In addition, Madaula also shared criticism of certain sectors of the party, such as someone who said that the formation was a “den of convergent autonomists who adapt to continue living from the trough.”
