Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro declared this Wednesday before the Police and denied any responsibility in the protest on January 8. A coup attempt by supporters of the former president to overthrow the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The far-right leader, who governed between 2019 and 2022, avoided all contact with the journalists who waited for him in front of the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia, but his legal representatives said he “explained” the situation and denied having encouraged the coup.

The person who has spoken to the journalists has been Fabio Wajngarten, former Minister of Information and current adviser to Bolsonaro. Wajngarten has assured that the former president, who was in the United States the day of the revolt, “repudiated” the invasion of the Bolsonaristas to the headquarters of the three powers of the Nation.

He also denied that Bolsonaro had encouraged the coup with his refusal to publicly acknowledge Lula’s victory in last October’s elections or that he had incited his followers to violently protest against the electoral process.

“With the end of the election, the president turned the page, did not articulate anything, went into seclusion and traveled to the United States on December 30,” still in his capacity as president, and remained in that country for three months, said Wajngarten, who said that Bolsonaro is willing to appear again before the Federal Police.

The process is being processed in the Supreme Court and aims to identify the “intellectual authors” and those who financed the events of January.

Due to the coup attempt, 2,151 people were arrested, of which some 300 remain in prison, while the rest will answer before the courts in freedom.

The Supreme Court has already accepted the charges against the first 100 defendants and this week is analyzing the charges that have been filed against another 200.

Bolsonaro, who lost the protection he had as president on January 1 with the inauguration of Lula, responds before the ordinary Justice in a dozen processes. He is accused of abuse of power and economic abuse. Likewise, he is also being investigated in other cases that are being processed in the Supreme Court and in electoral courts.
