A group of scientists from the University of Western Australia and the British marine consultancy Kelpie Geosciences captured a rare species of bioluminescent squid on video in the Pacific – with “lighthouses” in their tentacles – more than a kilometer deep.

The team captured the squid when they deployed baited cameras in an area known as the Samoa Passage in the North Pacific, according to a statement this week from the University of Western Australia, which does not specify when the expedition took place.

The world of squid is still something very mysterious for experts and scientists. Thanks to recordings made with special cameras, like the one in the video that accompanies this article, they manage to film them and discover their existence.
