The Botanical Building at Balboa Park in San Diego is getting ready to reopen after a $28 million renovation project. The city announced that the building will reopen during the park’s December Nights weekend with limited hours. Visitors can stop by on Friday, Dec. 6 from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 7 from noon to 6 p.m.
This iconic building, built in 1914, has been closed since January 2022 for renovation. The city recently shared a video on Instagram showcasing the newly renovated Botanical Building, featuring a misting system with digital temperature and humidity sensors to care for the plants in the greenhouse.
Originally estimated to cost $21 million, the budget for the project has increased to $28.4 million. Phase one of the renovation project focused on restoring the building, reconstructing the historic window arcades, improving accessibility, and adding an entrance and staff room on the north side of the structure.
Phase two of the project, led by the nonprofit Forever Balboa Park, will concentrate on exterior landscaping, irrigation, and reconstructing the historic pergola. This second phase will enhance the overall beauty and functionality of the Botanical Building, ensuring that it remains a crown jewel of Balboa Park for years to come.
The reopening of the Botanical Building is an exciting development for residents and visitors alike. The renovations will not only preserve the historical significance of the building but also enhance the visitor experience with improved accessibility and modern amenities. Be sure to mark your calendars for the reopening during December Nights weekend and witness the beauty of this iconic San Diego landmark in a whole new light.
