Tragedy in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, when a human stampede caused the death of at least 79 people and more than a hundred seriously injured, local authorities reported to the AFP agency.

The event occurred this Wednesday during a “charity act” in the Bad Al-Yemen neighborhood two days before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, said senior Houthi officials – the group rebel who controls part of the country – to the media. For now, the reason for the incident is unknown and the same sources have requested that an investigation be opened to clarify what happened.

The wounded were distributed to various hospitals in the city, while those responsible for the charity action were arrested, the Houthi Interior Ministry announced in a statement.

The country is suffering from a serious food and economic crisis due to a war that has been entrenched for eight years, when the conflict between the Houthi rebels and the government accelerated. Although the announcement of the rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which backs the Houthis, was made this week, it has raised high hopes that the conflict in Yemen, which has caused the worst humanitarian catastrophe on the planet, can finally be ended, according to the UN. More than 21 million people, two thirds of the population, are in need of humanitarian assistance this year.
