The office of the Syrian president, Bashar al Assad, announced this Tuesday news that has shaken the country and caused a great international stir: the first lady, Asma al Assad, suffers from leukemia.
As stated in the statement published by the aforementioned institution, ”after presenting several symptoms and going through an exhaustive series of tests and medical examinations”, the woman has received a clear diagnosis: she has acute myeloid leukemia.
As expected, the woman will withdraw from public life for a time and cancel all her planned professional commitments, as she begins strict treatment to take maximum care of herself and prevent any type of infection or disease.
The news has fallen like a bucket of cold water on the Syrian politician’s wife, since, a few years ago, in 2019, she suffered a very severe breast cancer that caused her to stop her life for a few months. Although she finally underwent an intervention and managed to overcome it successfully, it was a very complicated experience, both for her and her family.
It should be noted that, unlike other first ladies, Asma has always played a very active role in her country’s politics and has become a ‘reference’ for many citizens. However, a large part of the Syrian community has harshly criticized the British-raised woman for her role in the civil war that has ravaged the country since 2011.
The conflict in the Asian country was born as a result of peaceful protests against the Assad government in March 2011. The country’s high command did not welcome these demonstrations and responded with harsh repression. The revolt that arose gave rise to an open civil war that continues to this day and has already claimed almost half a million lives.
The main media outlets around the world have picked up the news of the illness of the Syrian president’s wife, which has given rise to different comments on the subject on social networks.
Asthma suffers from water myeloid leukemia, the most common type of leukemia in adults. It is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. If left untreated, this disease can make the person worsen quickly and dramatically, which is why the woman will focus on the recovery process.
