Art inspired by sea shown on World Ocean Day

A Brighton-based artist is showing her work as part of an exhibition delving into the challenges facing the seas, which opens in Seaford on World Ocean Day. The exhibition, She and the Sea, at the Crypt Gallery in Church Street, features work by Laura Callaghan among other regional artists specialising in ceramics, textiles, and jewellery and pieces by local art students. Ms Callaghan, who was born in Margate, Kent, and lives and works in Saltdean, describes herself as a textural mixed media ecofeminist artist, taking her inspiration from the natural world and the oceans. World Ocean Day is an international event held on 8 June each year.

The oceans have suffered from a record-breaking year of heat, leading to devastating impacts on marine life and ecosystems. The She and the Sea exhibition aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our oceans and the urgent need for conservation efforts. Through their art, the artists involved in the exhibition hope to inspire viewers to take action and make a difference in preserving our seas for future generations.

Laura Callaghan’s art pieces showcase the beauty of the sea and highlight the fragility of marine life in the face of environmental challenges. Her intricate designs and use of mixed media capture the essence of the oceans and serve as a reminder of the critical role they play in sustaining life on Earth. By incorporating elements of ecofeminism into her work, Callaghan brings attention to the interconnectedness of gender equality and environmental protection, advocating for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

As we commemorate World Ocean Day, it is essential to reflect on the impact of human activities on the health of our oceans and take steps towards promoting ocean conservation. Through art and creative expression, we can foster a deeper connection to the seas and inspire positive change in how we interact with our marine environment. Let us celebrate the beauty of the oceans and commit to preserving them for generations to come.
