Arrests Made for Looting During L.A. County Wildfires: 20 Suspects in Custody

At least 20 individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of looting amidst the devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles County. The arrests were made by L.A. County sheriff’s deputies in evacuated zones, as confirmed by L.A. Supervisor Kathryn Barger during a press conference held on Thursday. Barger sternly warned, “I promise you, you will be held accountable. Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.”

Efforts to Combat Looting

The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department has intensified its efforts to combat looting and other criminal activities in the affected regions. Sheriff Robert Luna emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the evacuated areas. Luna stated, “I’m gonna make this crystal clear to everybody out there: over last night and this morning we are up to 20 individuals who chose to go into our area and deprive these poor people who have been through so much of their property.”

Legal Consequences

Sheriff Luna also highlighted the legal repercussions of remaining in evacuated zones. He clarified, “When we have an evacuation order, by law, if you remain in that area, you are guilty of a misdemeanor. If you commit certain crimes, it could jump up to a felony.” L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman echoed this sentiment, condemning looting and warning perpetrators of severe consequences.

Firefighting Efforts Continue

Meanwhile, firefighters are tirelessly battling the Palisades fire, which has consumed over 17,200 acres, and the Eaton fire, which has ravaged Pasadena and Altadena areas, scorching at least 10,600 acres. Despite the challenges posed by the wildfires, emergency responders remain dedicated to containing the blazes and protecting the communities at risk.
