The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has proposed holding a three-way debate with Salvador Illa, PSC candidate, and Carles Puigdemont, from Junts, “where necessary.” In an interview in El Món a Rac 1, Aragonès has shown himself willing to “go wherever he wants” to debate with Puigdemont before the Catalan elections on May 12 even if the socialist candidate does not want to participate.
“If necessary I will go outside of Catalonia,” said the president of the Generalitat, who extended his hand to the socialist leader and the Junts leader to debate “the proposals for Catalonia.” Furthermore, he added that “if Illa does not want to come”, he is willing to have a face-to-face meeting with Carles Puigdemont.
If it takes place, it would be the first debate that former president Puigdemont would attend, since in the elections prior to being sworn in as president, the current leader of Junts started as number 3 on the list for Girona, the city where he was mayor.
On the other hand, Aragonès has criticized the PSC for the socialists’ denunciation of the Government of Catalonia for making electoral propaganda with its singular financing proposal. “The PSC does not want to talk about singular financing because they do not have a proposal,” he assured.
Regarding the move by the National Court to investigate the PSOE, ERC and Junts por la ley amnesty, Aragonès has considered it “surreal” that political parties are being investigated, and has criticized the separation of powers.
Furthermore, Aragonès has also commented on the CNI espionage case, in response to which the president has asked to “wait for the results of the investigation.” However, he has assured that “it will be necessary to demand political responsibilities” if the facts are confirmed and has explained that it is the first step to “end illegitimate practices by certain powers of the State.”
