Vladimir Zavadsky is the last Russian general to die in Ukraine, a regional leader confirmed this Monday. He would be the seventh highest-ranking soldier to lose his life so far in the conflict with the neighboring country, according to official data from Moscow.
The governor of the Voronezh Oblast, Alexander Gusev, said that Zavadsky died “at his combat post in the special operation zone,” using the name Russia uses to refer to the fighting that began on February 24, 2022. when the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, ordered his Army to cross the border and enter Ukraine.
Gusev did not give further details, but previously the Public Organization of Graduates of the Moscow Higher Military Command School reported that Zavadsky was the victim of a mine explosion. The Ministry of Defense has not commented so far.
Forty-five years old, Vladimir Zavadsky held the rank of major general, the initial military rank of the generalship in Russia, between that of colonel and lieutenant general.
From 2018 to 2021, he commanded the Kantemirovkaya Guards Tank Division, based in the Moscow region. At the time of his death, Zavadsky was the second commander of the 14th Corps of the Russian Army.
This confirmation came days after several pro-Kremlin media reported the general’s death.
“He died as a result of a mine explosion in the rear, and not in a military confrontation with the enemy,” the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel published.
That happened last Tuesday, November 28, during a withdrawal of his group away from the front and which these media described as “senseless.”
According to official Russian confirmations, under Zavadski their forces in Ukraine have lost seven generals. Four lost their lives in the first four months of the war, and another two in the summer of this year.
The penultimate of the Russian generals who died in Ukraine was Oleg Tsokov, aged 51. Last summer, the Duma reported his death while he was serving as deputy commander of the Southern Military District. According to deputy Andrei Guruliov, Lieutenant General Tsokov died as a result of a Ukrainian missile attack on the city of Berdyansk.
During the conflict, which has now lasted more than 21 months, Ukrainian sources have presumed dead 16 Russian generals in total. But at least three of them have turned out to still be alive.
