The Drought Management Commission of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins has decreed this Friday, at the meeting held in Malaga, to set a maximum consumption of 160 liters of water per person per day, especially on the coast of Malaga and Campo de Gibraltar.

The Secretary General of Water, Ramiro Angulo, has indicated that the rains that occurred in the Mediterranean basins of Andalusia between the months of October 2023 to January 2024 have once again been lower than the historical average values, hovering around 30% of the average in numerous systems.

This situation, which is repeated for the fifth consecutive year since the 2018-2019 period, translates into minimal contributions to the reservoirs, as is the case of Guadalhorce-Limonero. In this Malaga system, the 2.3 cubic hectometers impounded between the months of October and January represent the smallest useful contributions since records began.

That is why, after analyzing the evolution of the indicators and the current hydrological situation, the commission has unanimously approved expanding water saving measures through the limitation of 160 liters per inhabitant per day. This measure affects the systems of the municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar, Costa del Sol Occidental, Guadalhorce-Limonero and Axarquía-Viñuela.

On the other hand, resources are limited to 200 liters per person per day in the municipalities of the regulated area of ??Cuevas de Almanzora, declared in severe shortage, and in the unregulated area of ??the upper basin of the Verde de Almuñécar river.

The Junta de Andalucía will be responsible for measuring the volume at the entrance to the municipal header tanks or at the collective network intakes and may adopt the necessary flow limitation measures at the source in the event of an excess.

Regarding the industrial use of water, the Drought Management Commission has decided to establish a 20% reduction.
