Woody Allen narrates in Everyone Says I Love You the drama of a successful Manhattan lawyer (Alan Alda), committed to progressive causes, an incorruptible voter of the Democratic Party, who gets the upset of his life –he even suffers a heart attack– the day in which his son decides to join the conservative youth of the Republican Party and the National Rifle Association. And it is that unity is not even guaranteed by a good education, shared tolerance and the same ideals. Chekhov, a good connoisseur of the human soul, already wrote it: “Love, friendship and respect do not unite as much as hate”.

Yesterday I asked Marta Rovira, ERC general secretary, in El món to RAC1, about when the unity in the independence movement broke down, but it went around the bush. I have always thought that the struggle for hegemony has ended up prevailing in the world of sovereignty, but I also believe that there are characters on both sides of this universe who would never cross the same river together nor could they build a bridge to achieve it.

What is surprising is not that there are tactical and strategic differences between ERC and JxCat – let alone the CUP – and even personal incompatibilities. What is shocking is that the president of the ANC finds three pro-independence candidacies in Parliament to be few and is committed to a fourth: the civic list. As if the rest were uncivil. Or less civic.

The leadership of the ANC has blocked the creation of a working group to promote this new candidacy, since the initiative was voted for by 49%, when two thirds were required. The result is interpreted as a wake-up call for President Dolors Feliu. It was she who, in the speech on September 11, made ugly the pro-sovereignty parties that did not dare to lift the unilateral declaration of independence and issued an ultimatum to call elections.

The independence movement is a choir in which everyone dares to sing, despite the fact that some are out of tune at every note. Allen’s film ends well, it is not clear that any writer can fix the end of this other family entanglement.
