The carrying out of some works in the central Carme neighborhood of València have brought to light an arch from a 16th/17th century irrigation ditch. It is very common that, every time work is carried out in the basement of this historic district, these types of constructions from past centuries are found, which forces work to be paralyzed and delayed.

On this occasion, maintenance and resurfacing works were carried out on several streets near the Mossén Sorrell Market. When the workers lifted the pavement to place a new one, they observed a crack in it that revealed the old construction.

The municipal archaeologist was notified to analyze the discovery. Municipal sources explain to La vanguard that specialists from the council, the Generalitat Valenciana and the company itself went to the area to examine the discovery. After the first explorations, it has been determined that it is an arch from a 16th/17th century ditch and it has been ordered, dated, drawn, photographed and, subsequently, protected and covered all over.

For this reason, the work remains stopped and the company is processing an archaeological intervention in the Ministry of Culture through its archaeologist.

However, the Valencia City Council confirms that when all the actions are finished, the work will be reprimanded and the appearance of the street will be maintained.

In this area, the same sources explain, it is common to find finds from previous times. In fact, a few meters away, on the site where the new Espai Dones center was to be built, a fountain, a Mudejar patio and a 14th century wine cellar were found, which also forced the work to be halted.

Just yesterday, the Valencia City Council explained that the excavations carried out on San Vicente Street to carry out the renovation works on the drinking water pipes, which are practically completed, have brought to light new remains of the old wall. Islamic of Valencia. The discovery occurred at the height of San Fernando Street, in the final section of the works, which has forced the route initially planned in the project of the new pipeline to be varied, and moved laterally.

This circumstance, they explain in a statement, has generated effects on other elements that will be resolved before installing the tubes, given that the rest of the pipeline has already been assembled. As announced by the council, December 1 is maintained as the scheduled date for the completion of the works.
